Little Germany was established in 1855
Little Germany was settled in the Victorian era by European wool traders of German and Jewish descent. The first business opened its’ doors in 1855. Many of the original Italianate Victorian buildings still survive.
Little Germany was the centre of the Victorian Wool Trade
At the height of the English wool trade, Bradford produced 2/3 of all English wool. The majority of this wool was produced and stored in Little Germany. From Little Germany, the wool was loaded on to trains to be sold in English towns or shipped overseas.
Little Germany’s inhabitants funded some of Bradford’s most iconic buildings
Sir Jacob Behren, a wealthy merchant, financed the building of St George’s hall and Bradford eye and ear hospital – both of which are still in use today. The wool merchants also created the Bradford Chamber of Commerce, which continues to help local businesses access vital support.
Little Germany is a centre of film
With its authentic Victorian buildings, Little Germany is a popular filming location for English period dramas. Famous shows filmed in Little Germany include: ‘The Crown’, ‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, and ‘Downtown Abbey’. Recently, streets have been closed for the filming of upcoming Netflix Drama ‘Six Triple Eight’, starring Oprah Winfrey.
Little Germany has many unique tourist spots
If the history wasn’t enough to convince you to visit, perhaps the Cathedral and Bradford Playhouse will. Bradford Cathedral dates from 1458 and is completely free to visit. Bradford Playhouse regularly showcases amazing local talent. Little Germany is home to unique street art, including a unique stone chair and clock on Chapel Street, the ‘Mr. Bean’ door on East Parade, and a memorial to the formation of the Bradford Labour party in 1893.
